zoti aleyu (strange fish)
Exhibition ‘Art, Freedom and Democracy’, at CLB Berlin 2025
Sculptures on stage for the performance ‘To The Fullest’, directed by Fallon Mayanja at DE SINGEL, Antwerp, 2025
“Zoti Aleyu” is a sculpture inspired by diatoms, single-celled microalgae that inhabit aquatic environments. These organisms, responsible for about 50% of global oxygen, are crucial to life on the planet, occupying the base of the food chain and playing an essential but often overlooked role. In a science fiction narrative that the artist has been developing in recent years with Fallon Mayanja, these microalgae take on a role of resistance by organizing themselves and suspending oxygen emissions, challenging the relationship between humanity and underwater life, and emerging as protagonists of a new underwater community. They are home to the victims of the colonial period, who lost their lives in the Atlantic, whose bodies maintain their presence in the waters through these single-celled organisms.
